Microsoft Windows，是美国微软公司研发的一套操作系统，它问世于1985年，起初仅为基于MS-DOS的外壳，后续的系统版本由于微软不断的更新升级，不但变得更为易用，也逐渐成为大众最喜爱的操作系统之一。

Windows 采用了图形化操作模式（GUI），比起先前DOS键入指令使用的方式更为人性化。随着电脑硬件和软件的更新换代，微软的Windows也在不断升级，从架构的16位、32位再到64位，系统版本从最初的Windows 1.0到大家熟知的Windows 95、Windows 98、Windows XP、Windows 7再到Windows 10、Windows 11等，微软一直致力于Windows操作系统的开发和完善。

Windows在历史上曾出现过的产品可以按不同的产品核心划分为三类，分别为：以DOS为基础的Windows, 以Windows 9x为代表的Windows, 以NT为基础开发的Windows。下面，我们将一一介绍这三种产品。

以DOS为基础的Windows

该部分指的是需要自行启动程序管理器，即启动后还需要在DOS下输入命令win启动的系统，它们没有任务栏、开始按钮和开始菜单。这类产品包括：Windows 1.0、Windows 2.x、Windows 3.0、Windows 3.1、Windows for Workgroups 3.1x 以及Windows for Pen Computing 1.x，该部分包含了许多微软过去的风格。

在Windows 3.0之前，Windows与同时代许多系统一样，没有大范围流行。正是Windows 3.x的广泛使用，促成了以后的Windows家族的诞生。现在，在Windows 11内，你仍然可以看到Windows 3.0的影子，即便是深入代码的角度也不例外。

以Windows 9x为代表的Windows

Windows 9x是对Windows 95、Windows 98、Windows Millennium Edition等以Windows 95作为参考的微软操作系统的通称，与Windows NT分离于两个开发路线。它是一种多任务图形方式的操作系统。

为了能与Windows 3.x（MS-DOS）兼容，Windows 9x的核心里结合了16位和32位的程序码。

Windows 9x由于结构上有许多问题，所以稳定性难以保证，而其原因不限于此，与操作系统相关的应用程序的规格、驱动程序和设备的质量也有影响。Windows 98 Second Edition是Windows 9x中最稳定的版本，也是性能最强的版本。Windows 9x的不稳定因素较多，所以不适用于商业用途的电脑，而当时电脑普及的趋势是Windows 9x系列被广泛使用的重要原因之一。

随着NT内核日渐成熟，加上Windows 9x内核固有的性能较弱及稳定性、安全性、可靠性较差等原因，比尔盖茨在WinHEC 1998上宣布了微软停止Windows 9x开发，未来全面转向NT内核的决定。但在1999年初，微软宣布将再基于9x内核开发一款操作系统，使Windows Me成为最后一款基于Windows 9x内核的操作系统。

以NT内核为基础开发的Windows

微软公司从数字设备公司（Digital Equipment Corporation）雇佣了一批人员来开发该系列系统。该系统的很多元素带有早期的含VMS和RSX-11的DEC概念。

大卫·卡特勒（David Cutler），NT项目组建人。他在DEC设计了一个全新的计算机系列Prism，最终项目被DEC公司取消，卡特勒离开DEC，而这也成了NT的雏形。经朋友介绍，大卫来到了微软。然后在微软直接建立了NT项目，经过5年艰苦卓绝的开发，耗资15亿美元，由超过200名成员开发，最终发布了这个划时代的软件巨作——Windows NT。

Windows NT是Microsoft推出的面向工作站、网络服务器和大型计算机的网络操作系统，也可作为PC操作系统使用。它与通信服务紧密集成，提供文件和打印服务，能运行C/S应用程序，内置了互联网与内网功能，已逐渐成为企业组网的标准平台。

与一部分人的误解有别，Windows NT不只包括典型的NT家族，即Windows NT 3.x和Windows NT 4.0，在此之后的Windows 2000、Windows XP、Windows Vista、Windows 7、Windows 8、Windows 8.1、Windows 10、Windows 11，大部分Windows Server、Windows Embedded以及Windows Phone 8及以上都基于NT内核。
